Nepal is closely linked to the Himalaya and is well known for wonderful hikes, ascent of mountains and adventures. At the same time interesting cultural trips can be done in Nepal as well. Hindus as well as Buddhists live in Nepal. Even though there are different religions and ethnical groups, the people live peaceful and close together. The cultural trip leads through different historical cities. You will see the cultural and religious sights of the Kathmandu valley and its surroundings. As well you will get so see many Stupas and temple complexes. The historical royal city Gorkha can be visited on the way to the lowland to Lumbini, Buddha’s place of birth. And of cause you will also enjoy the wonderful nature.

1. Day - Departure Europe

2. Day - Arrival in Kathmandu

Transfer from the airport to the hotel and time at your own disposal.

3. Day - Sightseeing Kathmandu Part 1

Durbar Square is one of the oldest districts with traditional architecture. After lunch you are going to drive to Swyambunath. This attraction lies on a hill in the middle of Kathmandu valley. From there you can oversee the whole valley. On the hill there is a temple, a stupa and a monastery, which have a very important meaning for both religions (Hinduism and Buddhism). The temple is also called “monkey temple”, since there are many macaques monkeys all around the hill. These are not afraid of people!

4. Day - Sightseeing Kathmandu Part 2

Around midday you are going to drive to the Pashupatinath burial ground. This temple is a Hindu shrine at the holy river Bagmati. Later we are going to drive to Bouddhanath. The stupa here is very important for Buddhist pilgrims, who come from all over the world. The stupa is the biggest in south Asia. Around the stupa are many places to stay, since there is a lot to see and to discover.

5. Day - Bhaktapur / Patan

Bhaktapur is another old city in the Kathmandu valley; it is popular for its wood carving and a long tradition in pottery. From the UNESCO the city was pronounced to a world cultural heritage. After lunch we are going to visit Patan, another old city in the Kathmandu Valley.

6. Day - Kathmandu – Gorkha Bazar

You are going to drive about four hours by bus to Gorkha Bazar, the old capital of Nepal. Upon the arrival around noon you are able to do some sightseeing in the city. There are some well-preserved buildings from the 17th century to see. Today Gorkha is a regional market center for the locals.

7. Day - Gorkha – Pokhara

After breakfast you will hike about 1 hour to Gorkha Durbar (1355 MASL). Gorkh Durbar is the birthplace of the former king Prithvi Narayan Saha, who began to unite the 46 little kingdoms to one nation. This place is also very significant for the Hindus in Nepal. We will visit the old Gorkha palace and the two known well temples Goraknath and Gorakhali. Afterwards we will drive for about 5 hours to Pokhara. Pokhara is a beautiful city in the Annapurna region. The rest of the day is at your own disposal.

8. Day - Sightseeing in Pokhara

Today you will be able to discover the area around the lake. You can either ramble around the “lake side” area where you can find a lot of small shops or you can just sit in one of many garden restaurants where you can enjoy the view on the lake and the mountains. Alternatively you can make a trip to the “World Peace Stupa”, which is located on a hill above Pokhara and which was built with Japanese help. In the evening will be a cultural program with traditional music and dances.

9. Day - Pokhara – Pothana

After a nice breakfast we will be driving for about 30 minutes to Phedi, where your short trekking will start. You will hike steeply up to Dhampush. The path leads through forest and terraced land. After you had lunch in Dhampush the hike continues to Pothana (1890 MASL).

10. Day - Pothana – Sarangkot

Pothana is located on a hill. There you can see the holy mountain Fishtail (6993 MASL), the Annapurna South (7200 MASL), the Annapurna I (8091 MASL) and some more high mountains of the Annapurna mountain chain. After enjoying the view the hike continues towards Kande and Sarangkot. From Sarangkot you will again see the Annapurna mountain chain as well as the Pokhara valley.

11. Day - Sarangkot - Pokhara

After enjoying the sunrise above the Himalaya you will have breakfast in the hotel. Afterwards the hiking continues for about 2 hours to Pokhara. The rest of the day will be at your own disposal in Pokhara.

12. Day - Pokhara – Lumbini

After a relaxed breakfast the drive continues to Lumbini, where Buddha was born and raised. Lumbini is located in the lowlands at the border to India.

13. Day - Sightseeing in Lumbini and surroundings

We will see the Mayadevi Temple, Tilaurakot (Buddha’s birthplace), the Ashokan column and some more interesting sights, as for example monasteries and Stupas.

14. Day - Lumbini – Bardiya National Park

Today you will be driven with a small bus to the Bardiya National Park.

15.& 16. Day - Bardiya National Park

There are many activities in the National Park. Firstly you are going to ride on an elephant in the jungle. With some luck you will see rhinoceroses, tigers, antelopes, crocodiles, anteaters and some other small animals. There also is an extremely species rich bird population to observe. In the evening will be a cultural program.

17. Day - Bardiya National Park - Nepalgunj

Before Lunch you would do rest of the Safari program and drive to Nepalgunj.

18. Day - Fly to Kathmandu

19. Day - Kathmandu

20. Day - Depature Kathmandu

The daily routines described must be considered somewhat flexible, as they are adapted to local conditions (weather, new paths, etc.) as well as to your constitution. Your guide will plan and discuss the next day with you in the evening.

Requirements

You will find the level of difficulty and the type of accommodation of each journey in the program.

Equipment

You are going to get an equipment list as recommendation together with your travel documents. The equipment for a tent trekking (tent, mattresses etc.) will be organized locally.

Luggage

You are allowed to check in 20 kg as well as you can take 5 kg of hand luggage with you. If you would like to travel with a trolley case, we kindly ask you to take an additional big backpack with you. Luggage which you do not need while trekking can be deposit for free in Kathmandu.

Entry

For the entry to Nepal you need a passport which is valid further than 6 month after your departure date. You will receive your visa upon your arrival at the airport in Kathmandu. You will be told about the visa expenses while booking, since the fee changes from time to time.

Health

Himalaya Trekking suggests seeing your doctor or a tropical doctor as early as possible so you will be informed about current provisions regarding injections. Pharmacy or a doctor will help you regarding your personal trip first aid travel kit.

Group size

Himalaya Trekking guarantees for every tour. We do not have any minimum size for a group, but we do have a maximum of 12 persons per tour.

Tour program

The daily program should be seen as very flexible since we have to consider the local circumstances as well as your physical condition. Your guide will plan with you every evening the next day.

Travel documents

You are going to receive the detailed travel documents with general information as well as your flight tickets 2 to 3 weeks before departure.

Tipping

The tip for the local guides and carrier are not included in the travel costs. It is common to tip them for a good performance.

Accommodation and meals

The overnight stays in Kathmandu and Pokhara will be in a middle class hotel. The restaurants can be chosen individually, as lunch and dinner are not included in the travel costs.

During a lodge trekking the hike will be trough village to village. You will stay overnight in a basic hostel and you are going to have your meals there or in a restaurant on the way. During the camp trekking you are going to stay in one man or two-person tents and all the meals will be provided by private cook.

Insurance

Himalaya Trekking recommends having travel insurance as well as a cancellation protection. We also recommend having a copy of your police with you.

Climate

The weather in Nepal is nice. The summer is together with the monsoon season from June to October, the rest of the year is dry. There is mild climate in the Kathmandu valley, during the summer time around 20-30°C and in the winter time around 0-15°C.

Please consider the climate for your travelling plans, since the county covers a height form 75 MASL to 8848 MASL. Therefor the climate changes and if you are in the wrong place to the wrong time you will probably not see the Himalaya. However there still is a suited journey for every time period!
